1 day in Piraeus by locals: The Perfect Piraeus Itinerary



Piraeus is the biggest port in Europe and the second biggest in the whole world. 

Since we live in Piraeus for 8 years now, we wanted to prepare a one day-plan, for all of you who want to do a quick trip to the city of Piraeus.

Read below to find out the perfect 1-day plan, in order see all the significant parts of Piraeus and not miss anything important in just 24 hours!


1- Day Itinerary 


After you have a rich breakfast in one of Piraeus’ countless coffee places, you will start the exploration of the city!


More specifically, you will walk around Korai Square, one of the most central streets of Piraeus. There, you will find the Municipality of Piraeus and of course the, notable for Greeks, Municipal Theater of Piraeus. 


Piraeus’ Municipal Theater is housed in a neo-classical building constructed in 1895 and it is known for its marvelous architecture as well as its splendid performances, by talented artists.

Walking downwards the Vasileos Georgiou street, towards the port, you will find the impressive Holy Trinity Church (“Aghia Triada” in Greek). The Holy Trinity church is known for its size and its wonderful paintings of saints. For your information, the original temple was built in 1839, demolished in 1944 and rebuilt in 1979. If you are interested in places churches, be advised that near the Holy Trinity church, there is the Church of Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of Piraeus. Moreover, there is another beautiful one in Akti Miaouli, the Church of Saint Nicholas.


Of course, as you walk around the center of Piraeus, you will walk through the always crowded pedestrian area, in Sotiros Dios street. There, you will be able to do your shopping or grab something to eat on your way. Most locals consider this pedestrian street as the most commercial street of Piraeus and of course they go there for shopping.

If you are not tired and you want to explore Piraeus completely, then you must visit Kastella for sure! In Kastella, you will wonder around the tallest part of the city and you will be able to enjoy a captivating view of Piraeus!


Furthermore, in Kastella there is the Church of Profitis Ilias, which you can also visit.


In order to go to Kastella, you will need either a means of transport (taxi, car or bus), or go on foot, but beware that it will be a long way.

It is important to mention that if you are in Kastella, it will be easier to visit Mikrolimano, in order to take a break for a coffee or a meal.


Mikrolimano is famous for its great coffee places and for the people it attracts every day. 


Also, in Mikrolimano there is also the Sailing Club of Greece, where you can also have a coffee.


However, if you don’t want to visit Kastella and Mikrolimano, we recommend you to go to Freattida. In Frettida, you will enjoy your coffee or snack next to the marvelous view of the sea and the astonishing yachts. 


Moreover, in Freattida you can find the Nautical Museum, where you can marvel at nautical items and artifacts. Last but not least, we are sure that the first thing that will attract you, will be a part of a submarine, used during World War II. For all the museums lovers out there, be advised that Piraeus has also an Archaeological Museum, notable for its exhibitions. More precisely, for those interested, Piraeus’ Archaeological Museum stands out for its bronze statues and is located in Charilaou Trikoupi street (before Terpsithea Square).

Of course, your day will end with a visit in the popular “Peiraiki”. 


More specifically, you can go there by using a means of transport or on foot, in order to reach the beloved Peiraiki and do a relaxing walk, like every local does. There, you will enjoy a rich supper with delicious seafood dishes, in one of Peiraiki’s innumerable seafood taverns, with the company of the relaxing view of the sea.


After dinner, be advised that you can find various bars in the city center, where many people drink, dance and have fun until morning hours.
