What to eat in Poland

The flavors in Poland are quite different from what we are used to in Greece, yet that doesn’t mean that Poland is not a heaven for foodies out there.

In general, Polish food is simple in colors and decoration, but the dishes are filling and really flavorful.

The most famous Polish dishes are the following:

Pierogi (dumplings):

They are filled dumplings traditionally with potato, sweet cheese, meat, mushrooms, cabbage and there is a sweet variation with strawberries or plums.

Zurek (sour rye soup):

It’s a unique soup out of sour rye, with sausage, potatoes and sometimes egg. It is often served inside a bowl out of bread.

Golonka (pork knuckle):

Served with horseradish.

Placki (potato pancakes):

Fried pancakes made out of potato, often served with goulash (warm tomato soup with meat).

Kotlet Schabowy (pork schnitzel):

Since it’s a country in Central Europe, it would have been strange not to have a dish resembling the famous schnitzel. It is fried pork in bready crust, that is often served with mushed potatoes and pickled cabbage.
We tried pierogi with mushroom and pork and potato pancakes with goulash and beef. The truth is that pierogi were not that delicious, but on the contrary potato pancakes with goulash were phenomenal! We totally recommend them.

What is the typical Polish breakfast?

Polish breakfast resembles the typical breakfast of Western world. More precisely, breakfast in Poland consists of bread, eggs, ham and cheese. Of course, there are people who love sweets for breakfast and they prefer having pancakes with yogurt, jam and fruits.
As for the morning beverages, Polish people love coffee but many of them prefer tea to accompany their breakfast.

We tasted a rich traditional breakfast, that contained: butter, bread, sour cream, cheese, jam, scrambled eggs and a donut filled with jam. It was amazing!
