2 days in Nafplio by Greeks: The Perfect Nafplio Itinerary

In this article, you will read useful information about Nafplio and about how you can pass a wonderful weekend there. Two days are enough to enjoy a nice walk at the sights and the graphic narrows of the first capital of Greece.

Let’s see how you can make a wonderful 2-day trip in Nafplio!

Day 1

Knowing that Nafplio is a small town, you don’t have to rush! So, the first thing we suggest you to do, is to have a nice coffee in Vasileos Konstandinou street. What’s better than being in a wonderful place that looks like an island, marveling at the mesmerizing bougainvillea and people walking around its graphic alleys?

When you feel ready, you can start with walking around Nafplio’s old town. Even though it’s a small town, you will realize that it is usually crowded with people, especially during the summer or most weekends.

Of course, you will visit Kolokotroni’s park with the statue of him.

Theodoros Kolokotronis was general and pre-eminent leader of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.

After walking around town’s alluring alleys, you can take the boat for Bourtzi fortress. The price is 4.5€ for a round-trip ticket and it needs approximately 15 minutes to and from there.

As for Bourtzi, it is a castle built on the island of Saints Theodors. In the Venetian era, there was a long chain connecting Bourtzi with the port of Nafplio, in order to protect the city from enemy ships. Also, Bourtzi was not used as a prison as well as a place for executions.

After this exploration, it will be dinner time. There are many restaurants inside the old town, where you can taste the traditional food of Nafplio. The traditional dishes of Nafplio are the following: “goges”, “pasto chirino me avga” and “tiropitari”.

Unfortunately, if you love vivid nightlife, you can’t find any clubs there. It has nice bars though, where you can enjoy a drink before going to your room.

Day 2

You can start your day with a magical climb to Palamidi castle, which is nestled on the crest of a 216-metre high hill. Climbing 999 steps may sounds a bit difficult, but it’s not that hard. Afterall, you can make a few small stops if you want.  Believe it, the view is worth all the hardship.

Palamidi castle was built by Venetians during the second venetian domination, as a fortification. After being under siege for years, it was conquered by the Greeks in 1822 and so the liberation of the city from the Turks began.

Since then, every 30th of November, the day Palamidi was conquered by the Greeks, the liberation of the town is celebrated ceremoniously in Saint Andrea’s church, which is located inside Palamidi castle. Also, Palamidi was used as a prison and was the place where Theodoros Kolokotronis (hero of the Greek Revolution, as mentioned before) was held among its walls.

After all the tiring but fascinating experience, you can relax by enjoying a coffee/snack while marveling at the sea. You can do some shopping and after you have supplied with many souvenirs, you can visit the Archaeological museum of Nafplio.

It’s dinner time! For your information, most locals go out for lunch/dinner in the newest part of the city. So we followed their example and chose a tavern there and the food was heavenly indeed.

This is where all this magical weekend ends. In general, Nafplio is a really beautiful town, that has things to see and is usually crowded. But as we mentioned before, it doesn’t have a vivid nightlife. That’s why it is great to pass a relaxing and revitalizing weekend in a historical and graphic town.
