Goulash
Goulash is
one of the most famous dishes of Hungarian cuisine. The traditional goulash is a
soup with beef, potato, carrot and spices (mostly paprika). You can find
goulash everywhere in Hungary as well as in other countries of Balkans or Central
Europe (e.g. Poland). However, beware that each country or even each Hungarian
region has its own alterations of this dish.
We tasted goulash
in Budapest and we really liked it, since it was a simple tasty warm soup, which
was perfect for Hungary’s cold weather.
Langos
Langos is the
favorite food/snack of Hungary. The name langos come from the Hungarian word
for “fire”. Langos are basically delicious fried bread, in a circular shape.
The best part is that there is a plethora of toppings that you can add on top!
More specifically,
langos are golden crunchy dough on the outside and soft and warm on the inside.
Traditionally it is topped with sour cream and grated cheese.
The truth is
that it tastes as unique as it sounds. There are many places in Hungary that sell
it, since it is the most popular street food. Also, if you ever visit Hungary,
don’t forget there is a sweet version of langos, with chocolate or jam!
Chicken paprikash
Hungarians love paprika and that’s why there are many traditional
dishes that are based on it!
One of them
is the classic paprika chicken, which is beloved not only in Hungary, but in
the whole world. Paprika chicken is basically chicken stewed in paprika roux. Other
ingredients used are green pepper, tomato, sour cream, onion, pepper and
garlic. Lastly, paprika chicken is traditionally served with egg dumplings.
Chimney cake (Kürtöskalács)
The beloved to everyone chimney cake has its origins
in Hungary.
For those who don’t know, this sweet is a dough made
out of yeast, which after they knead into long threads, they wrap it around a
wooden spit. Later, they sprinkle sugar on it and they bake it over a fire. Sugar
caramelizes because of the fire, but it doesn’t end there: After it is baked,
it gets covered in more sugar and cinnamon or nowadays you can add chocolate or
even fill it with your favorite ice-cream flavor.
Gundel pancakes
It is maybe the
second most famous sweet of Hungary, after chimney cake of course.
Gundel
pancakes are pancakes that look a lot like crepes. They contain walnuts, raisins
and rum filling. The best part is that they are served flambee with a chocolate
sauce made out of heavy cream, cocoa and egg yolks.
We ordered gundel
pancakes when we were in Budapest and we were amazed at how intense the taste
of alcohol was, which almost overpowered the chocolate flavor. However, it was a
sweet quite different from what we were used to and that’s why we suggest you
to try it too, when you visit the marvelous Hungary!
