After our trip to Nafplio, we decided to tell you about what we find strange in this city.
Although it's the first capital of Greece, it is just a village
For those who don't know, Nafplio is the first capital of Greece, before Athens. Knowing that, we expected it to be more... like a city! However, Nafplio is just a small but beautiful town, with lovely colorful houses, which reminds you of a graphic village. To be more specific, Nafplio is a romantic quiet town and the ideal place for a quick escape, which will help you relax and run away from daily's routine. Personally, we believe that it's not suitable for young groups, since it doesn't have a vivid nightlife. It really caught our attention the fact that we couldn't find not even a club.
Hunting for the secret food
We searched far and wide, but... nothing. Thank God we had friends who told us that only tourists eat inside the Old Town (insinuation about us). So, we had to walk a lot ot reach a restaurant with authentic greek portions and tasty dishes.
In other words, if you love food and big portions, we suggest you to search for a restaurant outside the Old Town. A taste will surely convince you! 😉
Size doesn't matter
Although Nafplio is a really small town, it is a beloved place for everyone! More specifically, we were not the only ones who wanted to visit Nafplio for a relaxing weekend, but on the contrary, buses fulled to the bream with tourists (both Greek and foreign) arrived every hour! We can't blame them, since it's totally worth visiting Nafplio for a quiet and refreshing 2-day trip, in order to be escape from the stress a busy city, like Athens, has.
Nafplio's or Crete's food?
When we tasted the local products of Nafplio, we were amazed by the fact that two of their main products are exactly the same with Crete's local products. We are talking about "goges" (rolled pasta), which is the same with Crete's "skioufihta makaronia" and "tiropitari"(small pies with cheese), which is exactly like Crete's "mizithropites".
1,000 steps. So what?
Nafplio's most famous sight is Palamidi fortress. In order to reach the top of Palamidi, you have to climb 1,000 steps. At first, it sounds impossible or at least too tiring. However, it was really easy in comparison with what we expected! You can take small breaks as many times as you want, since there is enough space for you to stop without getting in the way of others who climb and continue climbing when you feel ready.
Of course, the view is totally worth all this climbing, since it's truly captivating, as you can see in the photo below! Therefore, don't let the number of the steps frighten you, they are not that many anyway!
We hope you found our information helpful 😀
